Denver, CO – – – Ed Markham, President of the Rocky Mountain Sod Growers (RMSG), recently announced the association’s support of Governor Hickenlooper’s Proclamation declaring July as Smart Irrigation Month.

“With this proclamation, Colorado is recognizing for the second year in a row, the importance of proper irrigation,” said Markham. “We work to educate consumers, municipalities and others that much water waste is due to humans not understanding how to properly water their landscapes. There are no bad plants, just people wasting water,” he added.

By focusing on July, a time of peak water demand, the month is dedicated to increasing public awareness of the value of water-use efficiency. The RMSG encourages individuals to learn simple ways to save money and water, promote smart irrigation practices, reduce peak water use and to play a role in the solutions by becoming more educated concerning actual plant water usage.

“We appreciate that Governor Hickenlooper has noted that water is a finite resource that is vital to human life and that well-maintained green spaces are also important to the health and well-being of communities and individuals,” Markham said.

Markham added, “Governor Hickenlooper has stated that appropriate irrigation technology, combined with best management practices, can significantly reduce water usage and runoff while creating healthy lawns, landscaping, and sports turf. We appreciate his understanding of the science behind growing landscapes and the importance of irrigating properly. We know scientifically that grass enhances the environment, provides a cooling effect, helps increase property values and many other positive benefits. We want to help people better understand how to have their grass and not waste water.”
